Steering Systems

S. V. Sapien has an incredible choice of Steering assignments; The Pilothouse has fantastic around-the-boat perspective. We never actually pulled into a marina using only the pilothouse steering but I'm sure it could be done.

Decadent, yes, but oh so much better than four hours on, four hours off, in the dark, in the fog, in the rain, snow whatever.

The inside wheel is the perfect size for the pilothouse, small but strong!

The primary station is a bit more complicated, but also really nice. The big wheel is easy to control in heavy weather*, and our Monitor self-steerer lines are tucked nicely off to port. Although Dena and I have never missed a pull at the wheel the Monitor windvane is by far our favorate (non-family) crew member.

..."I know I put that compus somewhere!"

(*We had nine days of heavy weather on our way over to Hawaii from S.F. With two reefs in the main and the headsail struck it was tea-time in the pilothouse even with 38 knots of wind and 15 foot fallowing seas four three of those days. We learned to love that Monitor!)
