You hit the nail on the head when you said that hinduism is a way of life...I dont follow any rituals and many in my family in TVM also have similar views. I am not an atheist, maybe an agnostic, rational or some kind of confused human being as far as religion and spirituality is considered....

Whats happening in India is the Us and Them philosophy......Divide and rule, which our politicians have learnt frm the british is being practised in the streets

The flaw in our democracy is once you create a vote bank, you can be the king in the coalition politics...All the scoundrels in politics are busy creating their own vote banks so they can reap the harvest. They dont need majority to rule, with some 5% of vote share you can corner a good no of seats and become a minister .This hindu vs muslim/christians conflicts are all the result of the vote banks...

Earlier fr decades, congress party created vote banks among the minorities, pretending to be their saviours...They ruled the country fr so many terms using this votebank as one of their tactics...This created problems fr upper caste hindus in the north , and they started the hindu cult and created their own vote banks...This was a reaction to the minority appeasements of the congress..

Now we are seeing the end game of all the dirty politics resulting in street fights and small civil wars
Well !! you guys are lucky as you can pack up yr bags and leave ,if it becomes too hot...
We have no choice other than seeing this through.....

Civilization would indeed be different in the absence of religion…some would say that religion is the cornerstone of civilization, the facilitator if not the outright inspiration for much of our human history, language, writing even the birth of science itself. I would agree, without the contribution that religion has played in the growth of our species….we would not be sitting here at a computer, having this discussion. If left to the laws of nature it would be a very different world indeed. Western Christianity, of which I am familiar, is a convenient aberration of faith. Packaged and marketed by our roman inspired western governments…when you read thru the new testament how could it be viewed as anything other than a political masterpiece….taxes, give unto Caesar what is Caesars….Slavery, be obedient unto your master…Respect and obey government…and for added effect, as if we could some how miss these fundamental laws, they were printed in red. ….So I don’t think that religion has degraded human potential, I believe men have bastardized hope, corrupted faith and removed in its entirety, accountability. Science searches for the beginning, that moment of singularity. Whether it was a big bang or perhaps a crack of thunder, does it really make that much difference? James I believe in what you’re trying to achieve and I hope you’ll continue my friend.

For the majority of my adult life I have held firm to the belief that religion, all religion, whether it be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jain, Sikh and on and on and on is the one mass delusion that our species holds onto for the purpose of holding back our own inevitable evolution. The thought that some big judgmental supreme being (or beings) are watching our every move and will ultimately pass judgment on us when our meaningless little lives are over is not only ridiculous and pathetically out dated, but it is the very definition of wanton psychological slavery. I believe that if we all could just live our lives on the assumption that heaven and hell are the choices that we have in the here and now, we could then live our dreams in peace and prosperity. This is not only possible but to me the very definition of freedom.

Dear Dena,

I read with keen interest your article. I am a Syrian Christian from Kerala and speak Malayalam. Glad you are learning it.

I do not think the problem is with Christianity as a faith system but the people who practice it and propagate it may do things that are distatsteful. All religions are good and teach us to be better human beings, which is at the basis of everything. If one is a good human being, there would be less prejudice, less effort to take to violence, we will be less intolerant and biased.
I think the notions of cash or food for conversion to Christianity is not true. As a Christian I am taught to be compassionate and share. That is not a ploy to convert anyone. In a country where people do things to get something in return, it is not easy to unerstand this genuine value of sharing and compassion.

I am not brushing aside the sins and mistakes of Christianity. Pope John Paul apologied for the sins of the church. Every Christian in prayer asks God's pardon for one's sins. Our sins are the result of our weakness not the weakness of the faith we adhere to. To be able to stand up and say I have sinned, is a great thing. But God forgives and we become better. But all of us are on a journey, a pilgrimage, none is perfect.
Bye

“experience is the sole teacher of truth” or could it be “experience is the soul teacher of truth” Crusaders or Christ, fortune and fame…or faith, Manifest Destiny or slavery, we all choose.

We all have a degree of prejudice with most based on some personal experience. For some these prejudices act as an anchor, for others a rudder, do yours guide you forward, or do they keep you safe?
